General MacArthur
On February 20, 1942, General MacArthur was ordered to evacuate the Philippines. MacArthur did not want to leave the Philippines, but following the President's orders, he did. Even though he left the Philippines, he vowed to return, saying,"The President of the United States ordered me to break through the Japanese lines for the purpose, as I understand it, of organizing the American offensive against Japan, a primary object of which is the relief of the Philippines. I came through and I shall return." MacArthur, along with Nimitz, talked to the President saying that taking over the Philippines would result in victory of the Pacific.
